What does the funding heatmap show?

Each row is an exchange and each cell is a 6 hour window over the last 7 days, colored by the BTC perpetual funding rate in that window. Amber means longs paid shorts, green means shorts paid longs. Darker means a larger rate.

Why does funding differ between exchanges?

Funding is set per venue by the gap between the perpetual price and the index, so crowding and liquidity differ by exchange. That is why the same position can cost noticeably more on one venue than another, and why the spread between two venues can be harvested.

How often does the heatmap update?

Funding rates are fetched hourly and each snapshot is stored, so the heatmap reflects the most recent hour and keeps a rolling 7 day history.

How to read it

Amber means funding was positive, so longs paid shorts. Holding a long there costs you.
Green means funding was negative, so shorts paid longs. Holding a long there paid you.
A row that is consistently darker than the others is a venue where the same position quietly costs more, which is exactly the cost the fee table never shows.
Two venues with opposite colors at the same moment are a spread. The funding page ranks those pairs.
